Too dry room air can not only affect the health of adults. Mucous membranes are sensitive if the environment is not moist enough. The impact of low humidity on babies and children is often reflected in health problems such as dry skin or asthma. When natural measures like airing, planting and drying clothes aren't enough, especially in winter, parents can turn to technology and set up a humidifier. These devices nebulize, evaporate or vaporize water to keep the room air in the optimal range.
– Too dry room air promotes respiratory problems in babies, children and adults. – You achieve constant room humidification with humidifiers. – The devices work either with steam, nebulization or evaporation. – Not every humidifier is suitable for every room size. – Proper cleaning of the device is very important. – Information about a particular humidifier in the test provides the magazine okotest and Stiftung Warentest.

The Philips HU4814/10 humidifier works very hygienically as an evaporator. The manufacturer calls this technology, in which air is sucked into the device via a fan through numerous slots on the sides and humidified over the large surface of a filter, Nano-Cloud. The air then re-enters the room through a circular slot on the top of the device. In the center of the lid and thus easily accessible, is the display.
The humidifier manages a room size of up to 40 square meters with a humidification capacity of 300 ml per hour. Three speed modes are available to the user. One automatic mode available. The humidity to be achieved can be selected in three stages between 40 percent and 60 percent. A sensor measures when the humidity is reached. A timer is also integrated, which enables an operating preselection of one, four or eight hours. When the water is empty, the device switches off automatically.
The integrated water tank holds 2 liters. To fill, you simply have to remove the lid. Pour the water into the large interior space. From the outside you can see via a small window how high the water level is. With a noise level of 34 decibels, the device is quite loud, depending on how you feel about it. At night, a sleep mode should provide extra peace of mind. The model from Philips looks great in the two available colors of black. Looks like a bucket with integrated lid. With its size of 25 x 25 x 34 cm it stands out quite a bit in the room. A replacement water filter is not included with every purchase. May therefore need to be purchased separately. It is also possible to choose the water tank in double size (4 liters). The device is then a little higher.
The Philips 4814/10 is a device with simple technology that has a good humidification performance when used correctly. We like the function as an evaporator and that the humidified air is blown back into the room via a 360 degree outlet.
Can you add fragrance additives to the water?
The instruction manual does not recommend adding scented oils or chemical additives to the water. The filter could be damaged by them. No longer work properly.
How often do I have to change the filter?
Depending on how often the device is used, the filter should be changed every 3-6 months. For maintenance, it is sufficient to put it in cold water or a water-vinegar solution for one hour once a week and then squeeze it out well.
The Philips humidifier seems to have a predominantly positive effect on the mucous membranes and state of health of the user with its performance. Many customers praise the quiet night mode. Operate the device even during the day with it. The built-in hygrometer doesn't do so well, as it often shows a higher humidity than independent devices on the other side of the room. The humidification performance also gets criticism from some customers. However, the manufacturer strives with information. Advice on handling to help.
– As an evaporator very hygienic – Predominantly good humidification performance – Easy filling – Timer – Night mode – Automatic shut-off – Very low power consumption (18 watts)
– Integrated hygrometer not so reliable – Perceived as too large – Additional costs due to filter replacement and cleaning

Blown into the room by a fan in the form of steam. Two operating modes can be selected.
The removable water tank of the Beurer humidifier is incredibly large at six liters, but it is also needed because the water is used up more quickly during evaporation. The filling level can be seen from the outside through a slit. If the tank is empty or the device threatens to overheat, the vaporizer switches off automatically. It is operated via two control knobs on the side of the housing. There is a power button. One on the choice of humidification performance. Due to the limited functions, the operation is almost intuitive.
Via the Beurer LB 55, air humidification is carried out selectively on the upper side, where there is a small outlet opening. The steam must first be distributed in the room. The shape of this white model is oval to rectangular. Included in the package are 15 anti-scale pads that slow down calcification.
With its huge water tank, the Beurer LB 55 delivers its performance without having to be refilled several times a day. The intuitive controls make it easy to select the desired level. We also like the fact that the water tank can be removed for filling.

Those who deal with the Philips humidifier also encounter the HU 4811/10 model. The white evaporator is similar to the HU 4814/10 in many respects. Design and size do not differ. This water tank also comprises 2 liters and the filter humidifies the sucked air through the Nano-Cloud technology described by the manufacturer. Filters are the same on most Philips models. On the champagne-colored lid of this model is no display, but a rotary knob, via which the two operating speeds "normal" and "quiet" can be set.
As for the functions, this humidifier from Philips is not so variable. It switches off when the tank is empty, but does not have an automatic mode, for example. The device also does not check and regulate the current humidity of the air. For this purpose, an external hygrometer is necessary. The power of the 4811/10 is high enough to humidify rooms up to 38 square meters. With 15 watts, the operation is in the energy-saving range. The humidifier can be ordered without or with a replacement filter. A filter change is due every three to twelve months, depending on the intensity of use.
A verdict of the consumer magazine okotest has this model from Philips already in the bag: it was test winner in the 2019 tested models with an overall line of VERY GOOD.
We trust the test criteria and reviews of okotest. Therefore, this model scores with its very good test rating, which praises especially the low germ load.

Advantages and disadvantages of humidifiers for baby and child
Humidifiers are definitely a helpful device when you take a look at the benefits. If the air humidity is not in the healthy range, especially in winter due to heating, you can use such a device to increase the humidity in a controllable way and keep it constantly in the optimal range. You will notice that the mucous membranes and eyes are less dry. In this way, you not only promote the body's own defenses, sleep can also be calmer – especially for babies, who react most strongly to air that is too dry. Depending on the model, filters also remove dust. Pollutants are removed from the air.
Like every additional device in the house, nebulizers, vaporizers or evaporators cause acquisition and follow-up costs. Some more, others less. You can tell especially by the electricity bill. It may also be time-consuming to clean the appliance properly. But if you don't do this, the little helper can become a germ slinger. Thus, the humidifier not only poses a health risk, it also poses a risk of injury, for example, if a child plays with it. In addition, it can be a problem for noise-sensitive people if the humidifier works too loudly.
– Increases the humidity controllable – Provides a healthy indoor climate – Keeps humidity constant – Prevents dehydration of the body – Promotes the immune system – Effect on good baby sleep – Purifies the air – Especially effective in winter
– Cost-intensive – Incorrect hygiene favors germs – Electricity consumption – Causes noise – Cleaning effort – Source of danger
Is a humidifier useful for babies??
If the air in the room is too dry, it can affect the well-being of everyone in the room. May cause problems with the respiratory tract, voice or eyes. Since the youngest children are particularly susceptible in this respect, a humidifier in the children's room makes perfect sense – especially during the winter, when heating is increased and the air in the room dries out easily. If the baby also suffers from dry skin, sufficiently humid air is especially recommended.
Since a baby's immune system is still very vulnerable, you must pay particular attention to hygiene when using a humidifier. Poorly cleaned equipment or a water supply that is too warm could spread germs in the ambient air. Not every type of device is equally suitable for the children's room. Some generate heat. Could become a source of danger.
Humid room air is like the delicate skin of a baby: It only needs help from the outside when something is wrong. That's why a humidifier makes sense for babies when the conditions in their room deviate from the optimum.
When to use a humidifier for children?
Especially in winter, it happens quickly: One heats neatly, so that the little ones have it comfortably warm. Because it is too cold outside, some people prefer not to ventilate regularly. Or it is better to do without plants in the children's room. Throws such a natural air balance out of the race. There are many reasons why the air in a child's room is too dry.
If the air in the room is still too dry, even at a temperature of around 20 to 22 degrees and regular airing, you should look for a humidifier. Especially if children are often in their room to play, their bodies can react to dryness with many symptoms: Dry eyes, irritated cough or itchy skin are not uncommon. The child itself will usually not even notice that something is different than usual. And even if, very few tell the parents.
With regular humidification in the children's room or bedroom, you can ensure that the room climate is ideal for your child – regardless of whether he or she is sleeping or playing. The guideline for the optimal humidity in residential-. Working rooms are in the range of 40 to 60 percent relative humidity. In children's rooms, the air humidity should be at least 45 percent, because the bodies of the youngest have a comparatively higher water content and therefore react more sensitively to dry room air than adults. Problems can arise with sleeping or the general state of health.
Excessive humidity in a child's room can also have negative consequences. In addition to possible mold growth and damage to furniture and wallpaper, the body reacts here with excessive sweating, whereby the body's own temperature balance no longer functions properly. In damp rooms, fungi or mites also have optimal conditions to thrive.
With the help of a hygrometer, the value in the children's room can be determined daily. It should be as constant as possible. The room temperature also plays a role in the measurement. For sleeping, experts recommend a temperature of approx. 18°C. When playing, it should be a few degrees more (20°C – 21°C). The appropriate humidity level is in an ideal range for babies if it is between 50% and 55.
What should a humidifier for baby and child be able to do?
A humidifier should provide the room air with the desired moisture content. It goes without saying that this is not automatic. It depends above all on the external conditions whether a certain model is suitable for your household. With children, moreover, variable functions, safety and cleaning effort are also important.
Of course, the design and price of a humidifier are also of interest. Depending on the technology and size, the prices are well into triple digits. Most devices have a simple design. Do not attract further attention in the apartment. For the children's room, aspects such as colors, lights and animal figures are tempting, such as the InnoBeta Waterdrop humidifier. More important than the design, however, is the functionality of these little helpers. And the following aspects are important.
Size and capacity
With the size of the device also grows the space for the water tank. Accordingly, you need to refill the container less often. Mini humidifiers are sufficient if the children's room is not particularly large or if the air humidity does not deviate greatly from the ideal condition. Most devices are around 30 centimeters high. They are conspicuous by their size in the room. The capacity of the water tank varies considerably: The six humidifiers in our comparison range from 1.8 to 6 liters.
Room humidifier performance
With its power, a humidifier can only cope with a certain size of room. So when choosing a device, the square meterage plays an essential role. A humidifier for 15 square meters does not manage to noticeably increase the humidity in a 30 square meter room. The positioning in the room also has an influence on humidification: standing against the wall, the unit distributes the humid air more slowly in the room than if it is placed in the middle of the room. If you want to treat large rooms with a humidifier, you have to pay attention to the specifications already when you buy it.
Volume
A humidifier in a child's room can also be used during sleeping hours. It must therefore not work too loudly. Some devices have a sleep function that reduces the volume. With the Philips HU4814/10 this is the case. If the volume permanently exceeds 50 decibels, this is not only a potential sleep disruptor, it can also go on your child's ears over time. In this respect, ultrasonic humidifiers are particularly well suited for children's rooms, as they hum relatively quietly. A circumstance that could even promote the sleep of your baby.
Energy efficiency and consumption
Devices with low energy consumption are particularly advisable if they are to be in constant use. An automatic switch-off function, as soon as there is no more water, reduces unnecessary energy consumption. The evaporators consume by far the most electricity. Ultrasonic nebulizers and evaporators do not make as much of a difference here.
Safety
An electric humidifier brings a more or less long cable into the nursery, which can easily become a tripping hazard. It also invites small children to play and explore. Ideally, you should place the device in such a way that your children cannot easily reach it. Devices that generate heat are not suitable for a child's room, as there is a risk of burns for a curious child's hand. This applies not only to the hot steam, but also to hot water. It could leak if your child knocks the device over. In this case, it is also very good if the water tank can not open immediately. Devices in which filling with water is somewhat awkward, thereby bring a higher degree of safety.
Features and accessories
A humidifier for the baby, which checks its own performance with an integrated hygrostat, saves you an additional device. It measures the current humidity. Decreases or increases the working capacity of the humidifier if necessary. The Philips HU 4814/10 works in this way. In addition, features such as a timer for temporary operation. A sleep mode for the time during naps very helpful. The Beurer LB 55 comes with additional anti-limescale pads, which prove their worth with particularly limescale-laden water. If spare parts and consumables are already included in the purchase of the product, this will save you money for the time being. However, do not underestimate the follow-up costs.
Handling
How easy it is to refill the water? The more often you have to do this, the easier the mechanism should work. If you don't like to study instruction manuals, the device should be largely intuitive to use. You can't go far wrong with the Wick cold mist humidifier, for example. It can be easily switched on and off via a rotary knob. For this you do without additional functions.
Hygiene and cleaning
If you want to clean your humidifier, a complicated setup is counterproductive. If the parts to be cleaned are easy to remove or even dishwasher safe, it makes the work much easier. To ensure that bacteria don't stand a chance with the humidifier, the water tank should be at the top of the cleaning list. It is not enough to just replace the water. As a breeding ground for germs or fungi, the humidifier quickly becomes a health hazard. You should clean the tank regularly with a cleaning agent and, if it is suitable, rinse it with hot water.
If you use tap water, lime deposits can become a problem. They affect the performance. Also provide a good breeding ground for germs. It can help here to use only distilled water from the outset – which in turn goes into the money.
Hygiene in connection with a humidifier also includes keeping an eye on the room air. It should not permanently rise above 60 percent due to the operation of the device. In rooms that are too humid, mold can form more easily.
Evaporate, vaporize or nebulize
Not all humidifiers are created equal. The devices make use of different technology to provide the room climate with humidity. Water nebulizers increase humidity via tiny droplets. Vaporizers work with heat. Evaporators regulate the room humidity particularly gently.
A humidifier comparison shows that not all methods are suitable for a child's room. For a quick overview, we have compiled the most important features for you here. We take a more detailed look in the following sections.
Evaporator
A classic water evaporator makes use of the transition of water from a liquid to a gaseous state. The water is heated until the boiling point of 100°C is reached and the liquid enters the room as vapor. This very quickly increases the humidity in the room air.
Where such heat is generated with electricity, the energy costs are always increased. Therefore, electric vaporizers are quite expensive in operating costs. If the water is also very calcareous, residues can settle in the device. This in turn can lead to the water no longer being heated properly. Residues should therefore be removed as quickly as possible.
It is precisely the heat with which a vaporizer scores as a humidifier: the high temperatures kill germs before the steam reaches the ambient air. The device is therefore far ahead in terms of hygiene. However, the escaping steam also poses a risk to a child in whose room the device is placed. In the immediate vicinity could be scalded by the steam. A vaporizer that does not have an integrated hygrometer could also quickly do too much of a good thing: Once the humidity has reached the threshold of 60 percent, the device should not produce any more water vapor.
– Fast humidification of room air – Effective even in large rooms – Hygienic due to heat – Small heating effect
– High power consumption – risk of over-humidification – heat source poses potential danger to children – limescale deposits impair function
You cannot operate a vaporizer in a child's room without supervision. Not only the curiosity of the little ones can be their undoing, but also a lack of caution can lead to a child getting hurt. Since the device also quickly provides more humidity in small rooms, the content in the air does not really remain constant, but fluctuates again and again. As a humidifier in the children's room, evaporators are therefore only suitable to a limited extent. The vaporizer from Beurer should therefore be purchased immediately with a suitable knife for the humidity and not be operated without supervision, even if it is suitable for the nursery according to the manufacturer.
Ultrasonic humidifier
An ultrasonic nebulizer uses a technique that creates tiny water droplets from water. These droplets are then blown into the room air via a fan and distributed there. Such devices are available in many sizes and power levels, so provide you with a suitable solution for every child's room. The Medisana humidifier, for example, covers up to 30 m². In any case, they should also measure the current humidity and be able to react to it to avoid overhumidification.
Since the water is only transported directly into the room air in a different form, bacteria and germs can also get into the room air via humidifiers with ultrasonic technology. One of the features of an ultrasonic evaporator is that a fine precipitate can be found in the vicinity of the device. It should therefore be positioned in a place where direct humidity does not cause problems.
– Available in many sizes and strengths – Energy consumption quite low – Comparatively quiet
– Distribution of bacteria and germs possible – Regular cleaning necessary – Increased humidity in device environment possible
Aroma oils can be used with this technology. What can be very pleasant for adults, may cause problems for the smaller inhabitants of the house. Whether an aromatizing humidifier is the right choice for babies remains to be considered. However, the device itself is suitable for use in the children's room: Ultrasound, unlike the vaporizer, does not cause heat.
Evaporator
Whoever reaches for an evaporator may be surprised by the low power compared to other devices. The room air does not become more humid as quickly as with vaporizers or ultrasonic devices. However, water evaporators are very favorable in terms of energy consumption. There are even passive devices that do not need electricity at all, because they are coupled to another heat source (for example, the heater). However, these are usually simple containers filled with water. If the water evaporates slowly, it is a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. However, these do not become dangerous in the room air: the water does not enter the room air directly in a gaseous state along with its germs.
The electric variety offers water to the room air on a humidified surface, and the air absorbs moisture as it circulates. A fan helps with this air exchange. Carries the humidified air back into the room. At the same time it sucks in still dry room air.
With an evaporator, it is not possible for the room to become too humid because the unit is set to too high a capacity. The laws of physics play out their advantages: At some point the air is saturated. The air in the room, if it has already reached an appropriate level of humidity, cannot absorb any additional moisture. Because of the advantages, evaporators are the most suitable devices for a child's room.
– Energy consumption low – Can not humidify too much – Also possible without power supply – Germs do not get into breathing air
– Humidification performance lower in comparison – regular cleaning essential
Not clearly can be assigned a further effect with the evaporators. The fan causes the temperature in the room to drop. This can be a positive side effect, but may be unpleasant in winter when the ambient air becomes cooler while playing.
Humidifier or air washer
Unlike a humidifier, the primary purpose of an air washer is not to increase the humidity of the room. The device is rather aimed at freeing the air from particles and pollutants. For this purpose, the air in the room is sucked in and passed by a rotating unit, which is covered with a film of water. The particles in the air remain there. Are washed away by water. The clean air exits the device again. The fact that it contains more moisture than before is a pleasant side effect if the air in the room is too dry.
How these special devices work exactly, you can read in our article about air purifiers and air washers. As an alternative to a humidifier, it comes into consideration especially if your child benefits enormously from clean air as an allergy sufferer or due to a respiratory disease.
Set up the humidifier correctly
A good place for humidifiers is out of reach of children. This may not be so easy to achieve in a child's room when the child grows up. Therefore, it should be taught from the beginning that only an adult should touch the device. Some places in the room are not as suitable for placement as others. On the windowsill or on the floor, depending on the device, precipitation could occur, which then causes the window to mist up or puddles to form. This can have unpleasant consequences for wooden floors, laminate or carpet.
When steam or mist from the device flows into the air, the humidifier should not be too close to a wall. The baby's sleeping area should also be sufficiently distant. So that the power cable does not become a tripping hazard, the device should be set up in the immediate vicinity of a power outlet. You can also take these tips to heart if you are buying an air washer.
Which humidifier is best to buy?
The disadvantages of one system are the advantages of the other – and vice versa. Therefore, ultrasonic humidifiers are not generally preferable to vaporizers or not. Depending on the system, a humidifier is also not exactly cheap to buy and operate. Nevertheless, you should take a close look at the quality and decide whether you would rather dig a little deeper into your pocket.
The humidifier should not be missing the automatic shut-off and a good cleaning option. Hairline cracks and manufacturing defects are also taboo. You should make sure when buying that there is no liquid leaking anywhere where it doesn't belong. Before buying, it is best to think about the following criteria:
– Which Room size I want to humidify? – Does the Power consumption an important role? – How important is the Cleaning effort? – Needed Additional functions like timer and fragrance? – Are my children sensitive to the Volume? – I like to invest a few minutes in Handling? – How important are results from a independent humidifier test?
Safety in the children's room also requires a suitable installation location, regardless of which technology you choose.
Humidifier under test
In May 2019, the magazine okotest last conducted a room humidifier test. Among the eight devices tested were one vaporizer, two evaporators and five ultrasonic nebulizers. The result was particularly poor for two ultrasonic humidifiers: They pollute the room air too much with germs. The Philips 4811/10, on the other hand, performed very well. It was test winner – among other things, because hardly any germs get into the air and the device provides quiet as well as effective humidity.
For okotest, the test criteria for humidifiers included the maximum output per hour, the operating instructions, the material and the emission of bacteria and mold into the air. The latter was cleaned strictly according to the instructions in the user manual. Devices were devalued if they measurably threw too many bacteria into the air or if water precipitation accumulated on the floor.
So far, Stiftung Warentest has not yet put humidifiers under the microscope. However, it quotes the results of the Swiss test magazine Saldo. It gave evaporators the best balance – especially with regard to germs in the air. Here, too, the Philips 4811/10 scored "very good", together with a model from Boneco.
Is it allowed to use distilled water?
Distilled water is formed when normal water evaporates and that vapor subsequently condenses. In contrast to the original liquid, distilled water contains hardly any trace elements, ions, salts, organic matter and microorganisms. For the body, excessive consumption is not advised – in the humidifier, however, it can be a good alternative.
Since it has already been heated, it is largely germ-free and thus helps with the hygiene of the device. However, it is often equated with demineralized water, which can be purified by other processes (e.g., water purification).B. mineral removal by an ion exchanger) has been treated. This liquid is not really germ-free. However, lime is also removed from the water – and this is ideal for your appliance, especially if your tap water contains a lot of lime. Since distilled water for humidifiers would be quite expensive if used constantly, you can also freshly boil your tap water before putting it into the device to support hygiene, however.
Alternative room humidification
There are some alternatives in room humidification that can definitely solve the problem of dry air. This is how houseplants with large leaves particularly contribute to a good indoor climate. But in children's rooms they not only take up space, they would also be at the mercy of your child's love of experimentation. You can provide a short-term remedy by placing the clothes drying rack in or in front of the child's room. But you don't achieve a long-term effect with it. Leaving the doors open when showering or bathing can also temporarily provide a little more humidity – but only if these rooms are not too far from each other.
If you're building a new house or renovating, you can score with low-temperature heaters: They dry out the air less. Building materials such as clay plaster also ensure constant air humidity. For those who can't necessarily resort to structural changes, humidifiers without electricity might help.
Humidifiers for heating
A small jar hanging from the radiator – you may already know this from your parents' or grandparents' households. It is a simple way of humidifying the air, which used to be almost part of good manners.
The advantages are obvious: it is a very inexpensive, easy to clean and simple to install type of humidification. It does not cause noise. Can be filled very quickly. You simply place or hang the small vessels on your radiator. Provided there is one in the nursery. With today's proliferation of underfloor heating, this is likely to become a problem for one household or another.
Radiator humidifier: simple and cheap
Another disadvantage is that humidification cannot be controlled well in this way. In addition, the function is linked to the heating: If it is not on, the air is not humidified. Then the water should not stand too long, because it can attract insects or promote the formation of germs. This in turn is very unfavorable if your child decides to take a closer look at the device. Humidifiers for the fireplace or the heater therefore belong rather in the common rooms of the adults.
Aroma humidifier
In connection with ultrasound devices, we have already pointed out that the use of aromatic oils is not recommended indefinitely. Your baby might react to the fragrances with an allergy that you didn't know about until now. In addition, the sensitive sense of smell can be easily overwhelmed if the concentration of the scent is too strong.
Where adults can enjoy a very specific scent, it's simply not necessary for babies – just as you shouldn't over-season their food. They have a lot to discover with their senses anyway. These additions are rather something for adults or for special occasions. For example, an essential oil can help during sleep when the offspring has a bad cold. Very importantly, it must be specifically approved for children. This is not the case with all eucalyptus, camphor or peppermint preparations.
If you care about a diffused aroma humidifier, like the InnoBeta Waterdrop, you should rather use it in rooms where your child does not spend most of his or her time. It can certainly serve your own relaxation, if you allow yourself a little baby time out. If your device can also be used with aroma oil, you can find out best from the description. Some humidifiers are already advertised as aroma diffusers, where the pleasant scent is one of the main features.
Conclusion – for an ideal room climate
Humidifiers provide a pleasant room climate in the children's room and in other rooms when the air is otherwise very dry. Eyes, skin and mucous membranes are grateful for the extra moisture, which, however, should not exceed a certain level. If used excessively, humidifiers can cause mold in the room because the humidity is constantly too high. A hygrometer will help you keep a balance. In terms of energy consumption, warm humidifiers perform worse than their cold counterparts in the test. Therefore, consider how often and where you want to use them.
If you follow the instructions for use, a suitable device can bring soothing moisture into the house and children's room. Baby benefits from the humidifier especially if he otherwise reacts strongly to too dry air. With sufficiently moist mucous membranes can survive especially the winter healthier. Especially sick children are grateful for the extra humidity.
