It's unfair: some people can eat whatever they want and stay slim, while others have to watch what they eat all the time to avoid gaining weight. Depending on how your metabolism works, it can either be the key to peak athletic performance, or the source of stubborn obesity.
What exactly is the metabolism?
Metabolism is the term used to describe all biochemical processes that take place in the cells. It is the basis of all vital processes in your body. Metabolized are the components of the ingested food. Your body supplies itself with nutrients, minerals, vitamins and trace elements and maintains the vital functions. The focus of interest is on fuels such as fats and carbohydrates, which the organism either converts into muscle power or stores in the body in the form of fat.
The end products are mainly carbon dioxide and water, which are excreted through breathing, sweat and urine. The hormonal and nervous systems control the metabolism. The most important organ for the process is the liver. An intact liver is therefore a prerequisite for a healthy metabolism.
What metabolism types are there?
Some people actually gain weight faster than others. Because there are great differences in the ability to filter energy from food. "10 to 20 percent of all people are good feed converters", says Dr. Michael Boschmann, metabolism expert at Charite University Medicine in Berlin. Wherever food is scarce, these individuals have a great advantage: In extreme situations, they are able to survive, whereas 80 to 90 percent of the population would be threatened with starvation.
In Western countries, there have been no famines for decades – food we have in abundance. The survival advantage has become a disadvantage, with civilization problems such as obesity, diabetes and high blood prere, for example. And so it is precisely the best feed converters who carry around a particularly large number of excess pounds.
