Cinema highlights in April 2022

Morbius

Theatrical release: 1. April 2022
Cast: Jared Leto, Matt Smith Directed by Daniel Espinosa Genre: comic book adaptation

Here's what to know: Following the box office success of Venom, Sony continues to expand its Universe of Marvel Characters from the Spider-Man comics: Biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) suffers from a serious blood disease. When he tries to cure the disease with his own blood, the experiment goes horribly wrong. Morbius becomes a living vampire and must constantly ingest human blood to continue living.

In Marvel Comics, Morbius made his first appearance in the '70s as the new antagonist of the friendly neighborhood spider. Over time, he became a cruel anti-hero with his own comic book series. The first teaser trailer for the film reveals a surprising connection to Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Movie highlights in May 2022

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Theatrical release: 4. May 2022
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Xochitl Gomez Director: Sam Raimi Genre: Comic Book Adaptation

Need to know: Of course, in 2022, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will also continue to thrive. First up is Doctor Strange, who was originally scheduled for February, but now won't set out to explore the multiverse until May.

Because at least since the events in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the boundaries between the individual Marvel universes are as fragile and permeable as never before. Of course, this mainly means lots of trouble for our cape-wearing friends, which is why Strange sets out with Wanda, now also known as Scarlet Witch, to restore multiversal order.

Movie highlights in June 2022

Jurassic World: Dominion

Theatrical release: 9. June 2022
Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum Director: Colin Trevorrow Genre: Sci-Fi/Action

Here's what to know: Jeff Goldblum concluded the previous film in the Jurassic franchise by saying that humans must now learn to coexist with dinosaurs. Although the plot of the upcoming trilogy conclusion is still being kept pretty secret, it's safe to ame it will deal with the fallout from Lost Kingdom. The primordial lizards have now spread all over the world. So there is always conflict as well. According to director Colin Trevorrow, however, Dominion will not tell a war between humans and dinosaurs.

The big news is that the two leads from the first Jurassic Park – Laura Dern and Sam Neill – will return alongside Goldblum, Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt.

Cinema highlights in July 2022

Thor 4: Love and Thunder

Theatrical release date: 7. May 2021
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff Director: Taika Waititi Genre: comic book adaptation

Need to know: Marvel's second film in 2022 is the highly anticipated follow-up to Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, which reinvented the character to the delight of critics and audiences alike. Natalie Portman's Jane Foster will return to the franchise, and it is now clear that she will wield Thor's hammer Mjolnir.

Don't believe us? Then just convince yourself by watching the trailer:

What's it about? Of course, since we're talking about an MCU movie, many story details are still under wraps. Judging by the first trailer, the Thunder God (who has regained his old physical form) is on a kind of self-discovery and doesn't seem to be as inclined to fighting as he was in the past. It's a shame that Gorr the God Buchter, an adversary who doesn't take kindly to gods, enters the scene.

Cinema highlights in December 2022

Avatar – The Way of Water

Theatrical release: 16. December 2022
Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh Directed by James Cameron Genre: Adventure

Here's what to know: The Way of Water – that's the official name of the second Avatar movie. At Cinema Con 2022, producer Jon Landau took the stage. Had the name reveal in the bag for waiting fans. He also announced that the original Avatar will be released on 23. September 2022 will be launched in cinemas around the world once again.

Not much is really known about the sequel to the (currently) most successful film of all time. The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in 2015, then 2016 – before they announced in 2017 that they were now planning not just one sequel, but a whopping four. That's why all the films were shot one after the other to complete the pentalogy.

Visually, of course, we can again expect a feast for the eyes. Director James Cameron has not been lax and wants to raise the bar of cinematic technology as he did with the first Avatar. The official pictures give you a first taste:
