Patients with type 1 diabetes are usually quite blindsided by the first symptoms: they suddenly have to pee all the time and develop an almost insatiable thirst.

When these signs of illness appear, utmost urgency is required, because patients can quickly fall into a coma – and all because the body has destroyed parts of the pancreas with its immune system. Without treatment, the disease is fatal. Current research is looking for ways to detect the disease before it breaks out. Even vaccines are being tested.
