The human body consists of more than half water. It is indispensable for humans. Plays a central role in the organism. Its most important tasks:

– As a building material, it is a component of all body cells and fluids. – As a solvent, it is required for metabolic and transport processes. – As a reactant, it takes part in biochemical reactions. – As a coolant of body temperature, it cools the body when sweating.

A lack of water can lead to serious, sometimes irreparable damage to the organism. Too little water in the diet initially worsens the flow properties of the blood, waste products can no longer be excreted via the kidneys, and muscles and brain are no longer optimally supplied with oxygen and nutrients. In the worst case, kidney and circulatory failure occurs.

Such phenomena are fortunately rare in our country, because there is sufficient drinking water and other beverages available. So is the water balance from intake. Delivery for healthy people usually balanced. The first signs of fluid deficiency are much more frequent: physical and mental performance is reduced from as little as 2 percent fluid loss in relation to body weight. This is especially beneficial during sports. Noticeable at work.

How much should you drink a day?

On average, an adult should drink at least 1.3 to 1.5 liters per day. All types of water, unsweetened herbal and fruit teas or juice spritzers in a ratio of one part fruit juice to three parts water are recommended. In case of reduction diets, illnesses, sports or heat, the recommended amount can also be significantly higher.

As a rule, thirst stimulates drinking in time. However, this sense cannot always be relied upon: under stress or during concentrated work, the sense of thirst is often suppressed. In addition, there are certain groups of people who should pay particular attention to an adequate intake of fluid.

Infants need proportionally more fluid than adults. You are particularly susceptible to dehydration, for example, during prolonged diarrhea. While fully breastfed babies meet their water needs through their mother's milk – bottle-fed babies through formula – older babies need to be accustomed to drinking regularly.

Even children need a comparatively large amount of fluid. When romping or on hot days their need increases further. In addition, studies show that young children often drink too little. You feel thirst less strongly or simply forget to drink. Schoolchildren can concentrate better if they are allowed to drink not only during breaks, but also during lessons.

Athletes must compensate their fluid losses well in order to remain efficient. For endurance athletes, for example, a drinking quantity of 0.15 to 0.25 liters every 15 to 20 minutes is considered ideal.

Elderly people often feel thirsty only rarely. Many people drink too little because they are afraid of frequent trips to the toilet or because of the outdated rule that one should not drink anything with food. For older people in particular, sufficient fluids ensure that their physical and mental performance is maintained.

Mineral water or tap water?

As a calorie-free and healthy thirst quencher, "water" is the beverage of first choice, regardless of whether it is drinking water from the tap, mineral, spring, table or medicinal water. Which water to choose in which situation depends on different forms of packaging, transport routes, costs and ingredients. Ultimately, it is also purely a matter of taste.

Make sparkling water yourself

While drinking water is unbeatably cheap and flows fresh from the tap at all times, natural mineral water often contains more minerals. Thus it makes a certain contribution to the nutrient supply. Especially benefit athletes who have an increased need for minerals, and people who eat little or not enough nutrient-rich foods overall. Most people, however, obtain fresh water through a balanced. Varied diet sufficient nutrients. The analysis extract on the mineral water label. Notes such as "calcium-containing" make it easier to make a targeted selection. Those who do not tolerate or do not want to consume milk (products), for example, can improve their supply of this mineral by drinking mineral water with a high calcium content. In the same way, people with high blood prere or kidney disease can consciously avoid "sodium-containing" mineral waters. Instead, choose those labeled "suitable for a low-sodium diet".

Infants can also be given fresh drinking water as a matter of principle. Unless there are still old lead pipes in the house. Who wants to use packaged water from the trade, should pay attention to the note suitable for the preparation of baby food. This ensures that the water complies with all limit values.

Lead in drinking water from the tap should actually no longer be an ie. After a 10-year transitional period, the following new regulations will apply from 1 January 2009 onwards. December 2013 new limits for lead in drinking water, which means lead pipes are no longer allowed as drinking water pipes and must have been replaced. If lead pipes are still present in older buildings, the consumers concerned must be informed of this in writing or by notice – even if the lead limit value is not exceeded. This information is important for certain risk groups.

Under no circumstances should pregnant women and young children drink tap water from lead pipes, but instead switch to packaged water.

Infused water – thirst quencher with aroma

Soft drinks and juices are unsuitable as thirst quenchers due to their high sugar content. And water – whether mineral water or tap water, carbonated or non-carbonated – is not everyone's cup of tea, as it tastes too bland to some.

The new summer trend "infused water" therefore seems to be the perfect alternative for those who are reluctant to drink. "Infused" means "infused", and that's exactly what it means: fruit, vegetables and herbs are infused with fresh water. This mixture is left to infuse for a while in the refrigerator. The aromas of the ingredients are transferred to the water. The result is a discreetly fruity drink that also looks good.

Infused water is often credited with health benefits – there is talk of detox drinks, energy boosters or fat killers. All nice (marketing) names for water with a hint of taste. There is little scientific evidence. But at least the fresh, pleasant taste will certainly convince one or two lazy drinkers to do something for their fluid balance.
