Relatives have the possibility to be absent from work for up to ten working days in order to organize care according to need in an acute care situation or to ensure nursing care during this time.
Employees are required to notify the employer immediately of their inability to perform work and its expected duration. No specific form of communication is envisioned.
For the claim of the short-time work prevention no care degree must have been determined yet, however a care neediness must be present, which corresponds at least to the care degree 1.
These regulations apply to all employers, regardless of the size of the company
A wage replacement benefit – the care support allowance – can be applied for this leave of absence.
You are entitled to a nursing support allowance during the short-term work prevention period.
The care support allowance gives families financial security so that they can take care of their relatives in need of care without a large loss of income in the event of an acute situation.
The care support allowance is granted by the care insurance fund or the insurance company of the close relative in need of care upon application, which must be submitted without delay.
Caregiver leave – time off for up to six mon.
With caregiver leave, employees can take up to six months' full or partial leave from work if they care for a close relative in need of care in a domestic environment.
Caregiver leave can be taken for close relatives in need of care with at least care degree 1, if the care is provided in a home environment. It is possible to apply for an interest-free loan from the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks for this time. The loan reduces the loss of income.
There is no legal entitlement vis-à-vis employers with 15 or fewer employees.
Interest-free loan during the care leave
To ensure subsistence during the period of care is entitled to an interest-free loan. You apply for the loan at the Federal Office for Family Affairs. Civil Society Tasks (BAFzA). It is paid out in monthly installments and must also be repaid in installments at the end of the care period.
The legal claim also applies to out-of-home care for a minor close relative in need of care.

Up to three months for accompaniment in the last phase of life
You can take up to three months of complete or partial time off to accompany a close relative in need of care in the last phase of life.
Relatives have a legal right to work less for three months or even stop working altogether during the last phase of a close relative's life. You can thus assist your loved one on his last journey, even if the close relative is in a hospice.
A care degree is not required.

Family caregiver leave – time off for up to 24 mon.
Family caregiver leave allows employees to take up to 24 months of partial time off from work if they care for a close relative in need of care in a home setting.
Family care leave can be taken for close relatives in need of care with at least care level 1, if the care takes place in the home environment and the working time is at least 15 hours per week.
The minimum working time of 15 hours per week in family caregiver leave is intended to prevent employees from giving up their jobs altogether because of caregiving.
The so-called "block model" of family care leave allows employees to flexibly divide up their working hours. The minimum working time of 15 hours applies as an annual average. The specific structure and distribution can be adapted to the needs of the employees and their relatives in need of care.
