New photo for the IKK health card

For many insured persons, we are currently requesting a new photo for the electronic health card (eGK). Background: We are allowed to use the photo on the card for a maximum of ten years. If this period has expired, you may not use this image for any purpose new eGK will no longer be ied.

What can the eGK?

The photo on your health card clearly identifies you as the cardholder. In addition, the eGK has a microprocessor chip that stores and transmits data and information (for example, your address).

With the eGK you also have proof of insurance outside Germany. Because on the back is the European health insurance card.

Your insurance cover with the eGK

The question often arises as to whether insurance coverage expires if insured persons do not provide a photo for the health card.

Unfortunately, the iance of a new electronic health card is not possible without a photo due to legal requirements (exceptions apply to a limited group of people). Your photo is an indispensable part of the eGK. Is intended to prevent misuse of your card. Therefore, all insured from 15 years of age are legally obliged to provide a photo. Only a few groups of people are exempt. This includes, for example, persons in need of care as well as children and adolescents under 15 years of age.

Upload a picture for the eGK

The photo on the front of your health card clearly and quickly identifies you as the cardholder. If you ever lose your card, you can prevent it from being misused by unauthorized third parties. The health card must contain a recent photo of you that meets very specific criteria.

Please note: Only children under 15 years of age and insured persons for whom it is not possible to take a photo for medical reasons will receive a health card without a photo (z. B. Severe care).

Your entire face must be clearly and unquestionably visible and have a height of at least 2 cm in the photo.

Only use photos that are 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high without borders.

Send us a passport photo with a light background and without any color cast.

The image background provides a clear contrast to the face and hair.

Make sure that your head is facing the camera, that your eyes are open and fully visible. Your facial expression should be neutral.

No other persons or objects are visible in the picture.

A biometric photo according to the rules of the passport law is not required.

If you wear a head covering for religious reasons, your face must still be fully recognizable.

Emergency data

You can have certain health data stored on your health card that may be helpful in case of an emergency. In this way, doctors or paramedics can quickly obtain an overview of previous illnesses and possible medical correlations in your case – for example, chronic Diseases, regularly taken medications or Allergies.

Who may view your emergency data and when

Only physicians, dentists and their employees as well as members of certain other health care professions (z.B. Emergency paramedics) have the necessary electronic Health professional card and are allowed to read the emergency data with your consent. Only in case of emergency, such as when you are unconscious, this is possible even without your consent.

Who can store and delete emergency data on your health card

Doctor's offices, dentist's offices and hospitals can store important medical emergency data directly on your health card – If you specifically request it and you consent to the storage.

Electronic medication plan

On the IKK health card you can have an overview of the medications you regularly take stored and made available to other doctors, pharmacists, psychotherapists and dentists as needed: the so-called E-medication plan. It can be used to reduce certain risks, such as interactions with other medicines or incorrect and duplicate prescriptions.

By the way: These professionals can only access (read, save, delete) your medication data if they authenticate themselves with a special electronic institutional or health professional ID card and you enter your PIN.

The e-medication plan contains the following data:

– Your
Patient master data – such as name, address and date of birth – your medication-relevant data – for example on allergies and intolerances – your Medication – i.e. all medications taken and information on their use (dose, timing, frequency etc.). The more detailed the information you provide on your state of health, drug intolerances, existing pregnancy, and prescribed or over-the-counter medications, the better the results will be.

This is how the e-medication plan is used

1. You give a one-time consent for the use of the e-medication plan to your doctor, pharmacist or dentist and activate the use of the e-medication plan with your PIN. Now you can arrange for relevant data to be entered into your e-medication plan at the doctor's office or pharmacy. 2. At your next doctor's visit, you then present your IKK health card to your doctor or his or her employees. Grant access to your data by entering your PIN. Then you need a so-called NFC-enabled electronic health card (NFC-eGK) as well as a personal identification number (PIN) for registration and authentication in the desired app, for example the IKK ePA. NFC stands for "Near Field Communication". This is a transmission standard for the contactless exchange of data over short distances, which is considered particularly secure. This method of transmission is also used, for example, with EC cards. NFC represents the basis for future functions and applications of the eGK.

You can easily find out whether you already have an electronic health card (eGK) with NFC function. There are two visual features:

1. the NFC symbol and
2. the six-digit Card Access Number (CAN) – example: 123456; data can only be transmitted in encrypted form without contact in combination with this number

Data protection on the eGK

You alone determine which medical data is stored or used on your health card. To read out medical data, the doctor, dentist or pharmacist always needs your consent.

So that you can use most of the voluntary applications, you therefore need personal access data: a six-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) and an eight-digit PUK (Personal Unlock Key). All insured persons living in one of the test areas are automatically sent this data. PIN and PUK are exclusively valid for your personal health card.
