Dalmatian – breed description
Hardly any other breed is so clearly identifiable even from a distance as the Dalmatian. His trademark are the black spots on white fur, which make him simply unmistakable. In keeping with his handsome look, he has a strong, well-built, symmetrical body. Absolute cult status reached the dog breed at the time of the Disney film "101 Dalmatians. The movie made him temporarily a fashion dog. In the meantime the interest in him has decreased significantly. He no longer counts to the Top 10 most popular dogs, but still he is a welcome dog for the whole family.
The Dalmatian – his character and nature
The beauty of the Dalmatian is that he is so adaptable and versatile. On one side he wants to run, move, get rid of energy, play and frolic. On the other hand he is a cuddly dog, who wants to be cared for, stroked and spoiled. A hard hand is nothing for this dog breed, it is much too sensitive for that. Easily problems in dealing with him could lead to him switching to stubborn or going his own way, because despite his attachment he is quite willing to make his own decisions. To prevent this from happening in the first place, a good balance between consistent training, patience and empathy is necessary. This leads to the fact that for the Dalmatian there is nothing more important in the world than his family, which he always wants to accompany and is quite willing to protect them. Provided that you already have a little experience with dogs and are ready to respond to his joy of movement, the Dalmatian is also suitable for Beginners suitable.
Origin and history
The origin of the Dalmatian lies in the dark and is based mainly on conjecture. Illustrations on ancient Egyptian pharaonic tombs bear a certain resemblance to the Dalmatian, but whether he actually has a history of several thousand years is uncertain. It is also not certain whether his name is derived from Dalmatia, a region in Croatia. At least Croatia is officially considered the country of origin of the breed. Sure proofs about the existence of these dogs exist only from the 16th century. Century on pictures of Italian painters. Also, in Dalmatia was found a fresco with a likeness, which dates approximately from 1710.
It is interesting to note that the Dalmatian was probably never used for hunting purposes, as so many other breeds were. It is known, however, that in England it was a popular companion during carriage rides to drive away street dogs. This task he took over also in the USA, in order as "living siren" to escort fire engines, which were still pulled by horses at that time. Even today the Dalmatian is the mascot of the American fire department.
Apart from these working dogs, the Dalmatian has always been a popular Family dog been. Since the end of the Middle Ages, the higher society often adorned itself with his presence. In 1890 it was then finally so far that for the Dalmatian a Standard had been worked out and he was officially recognized as a breed. In this it was also specified, for example, that the dogs must not have black and brown spots at the same time, but only one of the two colors.
Raising the Dalmatian
Like in principle every dog, also the Dalmatian needs an affectionate and nevertheless consistent education. Clear rules make it easiest for dog and family to avoid complications. He should not even be allowed on the couch, another time not – or chew a bone in the living room with his master, but not with his mistress. It is also important that a Dalmatian knows his position in the family from the beginning. And that is at the bottom! Even if children have little or nothing to do with the upbringing of a dog, it must be clear that they are fundamentally above the dog. You can find more information in our article Dog and child.
Proven to be an education, which is with positive reinforcement and without stress runs. With this it is quite possible to establish who is the boss in the pack, without the need for punishment. No Dalmatian likes that and that will not be forgiven so quickly!
Attitude
One of the most important points for a Dalmatian is enough exercise, because it is a dog full of energy and drive. Not for nothing he belongs to the group of running dogs. He wants to get plenty of exercise every day, preferably on varied walks of two to three hours in total. Not everyone can offer this, which is why a Dalmatian is not a dog for families who would describe themselves as not very active. He needs daily action, for example when jogging together or as a companion dog when going for a ride. Just as well the most different dog sports like agility, obedience, lunging or fetching come into question. Also a training to the rescue dog is quite conceivable.

The care
Although a Dalmatian has a short coat and is therefore quite easy to care for, short hair should not be underestimated. To remove them on clothes or carpet quickly makes you despair. Therefore, weekly brushing with a nap glove or a soft brush is recommended – especially during the Coat change. Overall, grooming requires very little effort, but don't forget: the amount of work involved with this breed should not be underestimated due to its high need for exercise.
Nutrition in the Dalmatian
Proper nutrition is of great importance for Dalmatians! Because of a genetic defect, he has a higher risk than other breeds of developing urinary stones or bladdergrass. This effect is favored by a high purine content in the food, which is why attention should be paid to it. The feed industry has adapted to this and offers special dalmatian food. But you should not rely on this alone. To be on the safe side, the pH value of the urine should be measured regularly, which should be between 6.5 and 7.5. In case of deviations a veterinarian must be consulted.
