Is coffee healthy? Yes, if you pay attention to THISIs coffee healthy yes if you consider these things

I never used to drink coffee. In the meantime, I have learned to appreciate coffee very much, not least because of the great properties that I will now present to you. Coffee is a caffeinated beverage. Probably one of the most popular beverages in the world.

Of course, we value coffee primarily for the wakefulness properties that come from caffeine. But coffee isn't just good for waking us up, getting us pumped up, or keeping us awake.

Coffee has some great properties that I'm going to show you in the following article and back up with studies. In the following article, I always talk about caffeinated coffee. Leave decaffeinated coffee out of the equation for now. It is astonishing that not all positive properties could also be proven with decaffeinated coffee.

Is coffee healthy? That's 7 proven benefits of coffee:

Coffee is healthy because #1:

Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants [0]. Antioxidants are, simply explained, little helpers that can slow down the aging process and prevent diseases.

Somewhat scary to me is the fact that most people in the Western world (USA, Europe) get more antioxidants from coffee than from fruits and vegetables combined [1]!

Coffee is healthy because #2:

Coffee contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, for example vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, or potassium, magnesium, folic acid and phosphorus.

1 cup (240ml), for example, contains 11% of the daily requirement of vitamin B2 (RDA) [2].

Coffee is healthy because #3:

As everyone probably knows, coffee contains caffeine. This caffeine stimulates the brain and provides increased alertness, improved reaction time [3], better mood, and helps with fatigue [4].

Coffee also stimulates metabolism (up to 4% according to this study [5]) and can noticeably increase physical performance (up to 12% according to this study [6]).

Coffee is healthy because #4:

Studies have shown that regular coffee drinkers have up to 65% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease [7]. Coffee can also reduce the risk of developing Parkinson's disease [8].

Coffee is healthy because #5:

The same applies to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance). Again, studies have shown that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

This study of over 400.000 participants showed up to 7% lower risk [9].

In addition, coffee can also reduce the risk of liver cirrhosis [10], as well as liver cancer [11].

Coffee is healthy because #6:

For me personally, very surprising is the link between coffee and depression.

In a study conducted at Harvard Medical School, it was found that women who drank more coffee had a lower risk of developing depression [12].

Coffee is healthy because #7:

"Coffee drinkers live longer", it could almost be said. In a large study of over 400.000 participants between the ages of 50 and 71, they found the following relationship (observation period 12-13 years): 4-5 cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of death by 12-16% (12% in men and 16% in women) [13].

These were the good features. On the other side of coffee there are some negative side effects, which I would like to mention.

Is coffee healthy? These are 4 possible disadvantages:

Disadvantage of coffee #1:

Of course, there are always two sides to the coin. The caffeine in coffee can trigger some things in our bodies that can be unpleasant, annoying, or even dangerous, such as [13]:

– Nervousness – anxiety – sleep disturbances [14] – palpitations – up to panic attacks

If you are sensitive to caffeine, then avoid coffee or drink only a little of it!

Disadvantage of coffee #2:

Somewhat concerning is a link discovered in studies between coffee consumption and blood prere. Regular coffee consumption can very easily raise blood prere [15]. According to the study, it makes no difference whether you drink 1 or 3 cups per day.

This increase in blood prere does not apply to everyone! You should consider this if you are sensitive to coffee or if you already have high blood prere.

Disadvantage of coffee #3:

And you should note that a large amount of coffee (2-3 cups) may well result in a small amount of water loss. This does not apply to regular coffee drinkers [16].

Disadvantage of coffee #4:

Of course, it's nice to be awake and stay awake with coffee. This can be a great advantage in some situations. The stupid thing is that by regular intake of caffeine (for example also by cola, tea, cocoa) one gets used to it and needs more and more [17] to achieve the same effect.

This can be avoided by using coffee as a stimulant and not as a weapon against fatigue. How to enjoy coffee. Don't use it as a means to an end.

Because if you do not, coffee withdrawal can even bring negative side effects [18], such as

– headache – fatigue – irritability – listlessness – lack of concentration

Please note! As with the positive properties, the negative properties of coffee vary from person to person and vary in severity.

Yes, coffee is healthy if you pay attention:

You can use the positive properties of coffee for yourself, if you consider the following:

– Don't add sugar to your coffee. (Use for sweetening best Stevia)! – Do not use milk or coffee creamer! – Please always drink filtered coffee (unfiltered coffee contains cafestol, which can raise cholesterol in the body [19].)

A big thanks to Kris Gunnars, who did the groundwork for this article.

I wish you all the best🙂

P.S.: What do you think? Is coffee healthy or is it better to avoid it?
