Omikron variant incubation period and the symptoms of coronavirus
Omikron still has a grip on Europe. Patients report new symptoms. What is known so far.
Dusseldorf The corona variant Omikron (B.1.1.529) has Europe firmly in its grip. In Germany, the Max von Pettenkofer Institute initially confirmed the mutation in Munich in two rice returners. In the meantime the portion of reported infections, which are caused by Omikron, lies in Germany with 98 per cent of all transmitted Covid-19-cases.
Experts believe that the variant causes milder courses of the disease. There are also new symptoms associated with Omikron.
What symptoms are associated with the omicron variant?
Last November, the variant made headlines when the federal government declared several African countries as virus variant areas. Angelique Coetzee, chairwoman of the South African Medical Association, told the BBC, "Patients usually complain of a aching body and fatigue, extreme fatigue, and we see it in the younger generation, not in the elderly."Coetzee is one of the first doctors in South Africa to treat people with the Omikron variant.
Symptoms of the new variant are unusual, but still mild, he said. It is also interesting to note that none of the patients treated by Coetzee had any loss of smell or taste.
This was considered a common symptom of the variant of origin alpha. As Covid-19 mutates, sensory loss appears to be sporadic. For example, a British study reported in spring 2021 that loss of sense of smell and taste was observed much less often overall with the delta variant.
According to the Zoe Covid Symptom Study from Great Britain, however Loss of appetite in connection with an omicron infection. It was not common as a symptom of delta variant, report data scientists, who created a new symptom profile for omicron variant based on the study. The UK's NHS recently summarized the corona symptoms. A corresponding list published on its own website.
The agency notes that some of the newly presented symptoms behave similarly to those of the common cold or flu. These include:
– Fever – Cough – Loss of sense of smell and taste – Shortness of breath – Fatigue or exhaustion – Aching limbs – Headache – Sore throat – Stuffy or runny nose – Loss of appetite – Diarrhea – Nausea
What is the incubation period for the Omikron variant??
The incubation period, i.e. the time from transmission to the outbreak of the disease, is estimated to be shorter for the omicron variant than for the previous corona variants. Some studies observed an incubation period of about three days. Previously, the incubation period was estimated at five to six days. In general, however, the incubation period of Covid-19 can last up to 14 days. The contagiousness decreases in the normal course after about ten days, in severe courses the patients are contagious for a long time after that.
Is the omicron variant more dangerous than the delta variant??
So far, milder courses of disease have generally been observed with Omikron. Fact: The new viral variant is spreading rapidly. The variant now dominates the infection incidence in countries around the world. In this context, the president of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Lothar Wieler, said that Omikron has an increased transmission, i.e. a high infection rate.
On 26. November, the World Health Organization declared B.1.1.529 to the virus variant of concern (VOC). According to the Robert Koch Institute, it arose independently of the delta variant. Compared to the original variant, it has an unusually high number of about 30 amino acid changes in the spike protein, as well as some mutations of as yet unknown significance.

Do current vaccines protect against the Omicron variant?
The currently available vaccines protect against severe courses of disease with the coronavirus. This is what experts like Carsten Watzl and Christian Drosten say. However, protection against infection with the omicron variant is said to be mixed. For example, the CEO of mRNA manufacturer Moderna, Stephane Bancel, explained that the vaccines at hand are far more ineffective against the new omicron variant of the coronavirus. A corresponding picture is shown by the numerous vaccination breakthroughs reported in Germany.
The Mainz-based vaccine manufacturer Biontech is already working on the development of an adapted vaccine. Stephen Hoge, president and head of research and development at Moderna, had also announced plans to customize his company's vaccine. Experts, however, ame that the adapted vaccines will not be available until May 2022 at the earliest.
