It's news that shocks: Bruce Willis ends his career. But not because the 67-year-old has grown bored of appearing in numerous VoD works, but because of an illness. In fact, the Hollywood star is said to be suffering from some health problems, as his daughter Rumer Willis let know on Instagram on behalf of the entire family. After careful consideration, he therefore decided to draw a line under the matter:
"To the great supporters* of Bruce [Willis]: as a family, we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has had some health ies and was recently diagnosed with aphasia, which affects his cognitive abilities. For this reason, and after careful consideration, Bruce is ending the career that meant so much to him. This is a really difficult time for our family and we are so grateful for your continued love, compassion and support. We stand through this as a strong family unit and wanted to include his fans because we know how much he means to you – as much as you mean to him. As Bruce always likes to say, 'Let it rip'. And together we intend to do just that. With love, Emma, Demi, Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn."
His daughter Rumer speaking out via Instagram to announce the end of her father's career could be an indication of just how bad things are for the actor. In the past, the actor was repeatedly criticized for obscure interviews in which he was accused that his answers did not make sense, such as in "The One Show" on BBC. There have even been suggestions that he was drugged while doing it. Against the backdrop of his aphasia diagnosis, the ridicule he has received is all the sadder:
Bruce Willis is ending his career: What is aphasia?
Actors must not only be able to cut a good figure in front of the camera, they also give the dialog from the script its emotional depth. One can imagine that this can hardly be done with a speech impediment. And yet it was stuttering that first led him to acting as a teenager. Aphasia is an acquired speech disorder, often caused by a stroke, but also by inflammatory diseases, for example. The speech center in the brain is damaged in sufferers. The result is severe impairment of speech, comprehension, reading and writing. It is said that in one-third of cases, speech functions return to normal within a few months. But there are also said to be sufferers who fall completely silent.
For fans, this announcement about the end of the superstar's career may come as a shock. Now, possibly, it should also be clear why Willis has been increasingly withdrawing from the film business in recent years, taking only small roles in relatively insignificant B and C works, in which he had hardly any dialogue.
Most suspected that the actor was tired of his profession, just wanted to collect quick millions for short appearances. In fact, Willis has appeared in a total of 33 films in the past five years, 25 of which have already been released. Only three films ("Death Wish," "Glass" and "The Lego Movie 2") have been released theatrically, the rest were VoD releases. Eight more movies with him will be released this. Next year.
Unforgotten, however, is Willis' leap into Hollywood's A-League as John McClane in "Die Hard", which was followed by further works such as "Last Boy Scout", "Death Suits Her", "Pulp Fiction", "12 Monkeys" and "The Sixth Sense". With "Unbreakable," he and director M. Night Shyamalan possibly the best superhero*innenfilm ever ab. The nineties were the decade of Bruce Willis. With different films he stood out from his action colleagues and always proved a good hand in his choice of roles. No one will be able to take this time away from him.
We wish him only the best and a speedy recovery.
