What awaits you in the job?
Not only doctors and nurses work in hospitals. There is much more going on behind the scenes: medical equipment such as syringes and surgical instruments or bed linen must be purchased, the costs for these must be calculated and deliveries must be received. This is what a business administrator in the health care sector does. It is important to work accurately, not to be afraid of tables and figures and to enjoy organizing. Business people also manage patients' medical records. Keep track of the cost of treatment. When someone is referred to the hospital, the health care clerk takes their information. Sending out invoices and checking to make sure the amounts listed are correct. Health care professionals are also needed in rehabilitation clinics, ambulance services, outpatient practices and medical laboratories. They also often work for health insurance companies. There they advise customers, discuss services and calculate the costs for them. Can the cure be taken? Which wheelchair does a patient need? Is the request for care correct? They take care of quality arance, but also keep an eye on profitability.
A healthcare clerk spends most of his time in the office and at the computer. At the same time always be in contact with customers. Patients – on the phone or in personal consultations.
How the training works?
To become a healthcare clerk, you have to complete a three-year dual training program. In the vocational school you will learn everything you need to know about commercial work. How to do accounting? How to prepare balance sheets, how to plan marketing activities? How to handle orders and deliveries? You will get to know important laws and learn how the German health care system is structured. Social studies, German, English and sports are also on the schedule. In the company, you will conduct customer consultations, prepare offers and draw up contracts.
The final exams for your training as a healthcare clerk will be written and oral. The written part consists of a questionnaire. A multiple-choice test. In the oral part, questions on one of two presented topics must be answered.

What you need to bring with you?
You don't need a special school-leaving certificate to become a healthcare clerk. Nevertheless, applicants with a degree have better chances: according to the Federal Employment Agency, 64 percent of all new entrants to the profession currently have an Abitur or Fachhochschulreife and a further 30 percent have a Mittlere Reife.
You should enjoy math and economics. The calculator is your friend. You like to work at a desk? Super! A good grade in German can also be helpful, as you will often have to conduct customer conversations and formulate offers. It is also important that you are comfortable with exact and careful work. And you should have a desire to deal with people, be able to keep confidential information to yourself and have empathy.
