Two enzymes cut fragments in the wrong place

Two enzymes are blamed for the wrong cut: Beta-secretase and gamma-secretase.

In the healthy brain, these fragments are broken down and destroyed. In Alzheimer's disease, however, they accumulate into often indissoluble plaques with far-reaching effects on the brain. They put the neurons out of action.

Research hopes for early solution

A specially developed labeling method makes it possible to make the beta-amyloid proteins visible. With new agents, researchers hope to soon prevent the formation of B-amyloid by blocking the corresponding enzyme and thus slowing down or even completely stopping the formation of plaques.
