The right pillow prevents tension and pain. Find the right pillow for your sleeping position and body type.

As different as our sleeping habits are, as different is which pillow to use and in which way to use your pillow. One can roughly divide into two types of "pillow users" here differentiate: There are the "pillow huggers", who prefer to put a large pillow filled with feathers or flakes cuddled together under their head, and there are those who are simply "good" lie on their form pillow – transitions between the two groups are fluid.

For all, however, the pillow should fulfill an important function: It should provide support for the head, relieve the cervical spine and prevent the head from bending and the neck and neck muscles from being overstretched. The importance of the pillow in bed is often underestimated, because the choice of the right pillow contributes significantly to a good and restful sleep. An incorrect head position often leads to tension in the cervical vertebrae, as well as neck and headaches. If you wake up in the morning with tension and pain in the neck and shoulder area, you should check the position of your head. With wrong sleeping habits the spinal column is either overstretched, or it sags. There is no patent remedy for which pillow is the right one for which condition.

With the right pillow to the optimal sleeping position

As different as the personal requirements for a pillow may be, there are some tasks that every pillow should fulfill:

The most important function of the pillow is to support the cervical spine in its natural S-shape. A good pillow is characterized by great flexibility, because the sleeper changes his lying position several times during the night.

The particularly critical and pain-sensitive part of the cervical spine, the neck, needs an anatomically shaped and orthopedically structured support. It bears the load of the head. Muscles and tendons keep it upright and enable its movement.

Pillows that are too hard cannot adapt to the individual head shape of the sleeper and hinder the function of the nerves and blood vessels. The air-conditioning properties of a pillow should also not be underestimated. For longer periods of lying, a pillow should not hinder perspiration in the head and neck area.

The right pillow size

You should generally make sure that your shoulders do not rest on the pillow, but that only your head and neck rest on it. Only in this way can your shoulder sink optimally into the mattress. Orthopedists also generally advise against large pillows for the reasons mentioned above. Therefore, we recommend a pillow of size 40×80 cm for sleeping.

This practical pillow size has nowadays – quite rightly – almost completely displaced the old pillow standard size 80×80 cm from German bedrooms. This is because the traditional square pillow format is quite awkward to use in everyday life. Usually half of the upper body lies uncomfortably on the pillow. If you bend it in the middle to make it smaller, it is often much too high.

However, as a back support for reading or as a large sofa cuddle pillow, the format is perfectly suitable. That is why we offer this size with some filling materials. Enjoy the additional comfort of a "second pillow"!

The "ideal pillow for everyone does not exist

Most people turn at night in different sleeping postures. It is therefore important that a pillow adapts to your movements. The sleeping position, which is predominant for you, should be decisive for the choice of the pillow:

Side sleepers:

More than half of all people sleep predominantly on their side. It is important that the pillow fills the shoulder-neck triangle and holds the head up to prevent the cervical spine from buckling or overstretching. Therefore, side sleepers like to cuddle their pillow so that it supports the head well or use a neck support pillow, which should also be suitable for side sleepers due to its anatomical shape. Please note that overly soft pillows do not have the necessary load-bearing capacity to provide sufficient support for the head in the lateral position.

back sleepers:

In the supine position, the pillow should fill the neck cavity, i.e. the area between the back of the head and the shoulder, to provide comfortable relief. At the same time, however, the pillow should not be too high, many back sleepers prefer somewhat flatter pillows. A neck support pillow provides pleasant support for the neck.

stomach sleepers:

Abdominal sleepers need flat pillows, often the pillow is even dispensed with altogether. This is because the cervical vertebrae are already under a lot of strain due to the sideways position of the head, and a high pillow would bend the spine even more. Therefore, we especially recommend natural hair pillows with variable filling quantity for stomach sleepers: These can "lie flat" in the stomach position become. If the sleeper turns to the side, the pillow can be crumpled into a firmer position. Whether it makes sense to "force" a stomach sleeper onto their back using a neck support pillow, is a moot point. Ultimately, it is crucial that the person feels comfortable in his sleeping position and can sleep well.

Broad-shouldered people:

As a rule of thumb: broad-shouldered men need a higher pillow than petite women, the same applies to heavier people – they also cope better with a high pillow. This is due to the fact that broad shoulders and a higher weight are easily "too low" can sink into the mattress. To prevent this, the head should be positioned slightly higher, and the shoulder no longer sinks in so deeply. Neck support pillows are particularly suitable for this.

Pillow fillings: Firm or soft, cozy or cool

To get an overview of our pillow selection, learn more about the different types of pillow fillings here:

Fluff pillows / natural hair pillows:

More stable and firm but elastic enough are fillings made of natural hair such as merino wool or a mixture of virgin sheep's wool and camel hair. The puffy wool flocks are easy to fluff up and press into position. We also recommend natural hair pillows for people who sweat easily, as they do not generate heat build-up and allow optimal moisture transport.

neck support pillow:

Neck support pillows, also called orthopedic pillows or shaped pillows, are designed to bring restful sleep to people with tense neck muscles. The principle is simple: a latex block holds the head in the center of the body axis, so that the neck vertebrae do not bend.

So much for the theory. In practice, each sleeper turns several times. Therefore, the head should be optimally supported by the neck support pillow both in the supine and lateral position. Soft mattresses require better support than hard mattresses. With some pillows, it is possible to adjust the shape to the proportions of the user, for example, through removable latex plates. Whether you find a neck pillow comfortable, you can often only after ca. 10 nights, as the adjustment factor from a cuddly pillow to a neck support pillow plays a significant role.

By choosing an allnatura neck support pillow you avoid a cramped, unnatural sleeping posture of the head and shoulder area. The allnatura neck support pillows support the cervical spine in its natural S curve. This allows tendons, ligaments and muscles to relax and regenerate to a large extent. They are able to support the head and neck correctly in both the supine and lateral positions without creating prere points.

Millet and spelt:

Millet and spelt pillows offer a good alternative to the normal feather pillow, which has no supporting function without being compressed or rolled up. Particularly sensitive and also migraine-prone persons react more positively to millet and spelt pillows than to feather pillows, which can build up a slight static field to which particularly sensitive persons can react negatively.

Millet and spelt pillows are relatively firm, store comforting warmth especially on cold winter nights and at the same time adapt to the body. A special feature here is the "trickling noise" The neck support pillow is a pillow that some people find soothing, but others find disturbing. Grain pillows from allnatura dampen the trickling noise by an additional inner cover. Our pillows made of natural materials fulfill all these conditions perfectly. Ensure orthopedically correct sleeping comfort.

In addition, all cushions are equipped with a practical zipper that allows you to wash the cushion cover. They are all washable at 60 ° C.
