Caries, plaque – and what fluoride has to do with it
Tooth decay is caused by bacterial plaque. Plaque bacteria feed on the sugar from our food. They form acids that dissolve minerals from tooth enamel and damage it. This can be counteracted with fluoride toothpaste. The effectiveness is clearly proven: Fluoride helps restore minerals to the tooth surface. And it makes teeth more resistant to acids – so it prevents tooth decay. Toothpastes with amine fluoride, stannous fluoride and those with sodium fluoride are particularly suitable for caries prophylaxis. In addition, fluorides have antimicrobial properties. So they not only prevent tooth decay, but also have a plaque- and inflammation-inhibiting effect.
Tip: You can filter the toothpastes in the test specifically by type of fluoride. Toothpastes that deliberately do not contain fluoride are rated poor.

Eight times poor in the latest toothpaste test
Eight universal toothpastes in the current test are unsatisfactory – because they contain too little or no fluoride. Among them is the most expensive toothpaste in the test at 11 euros per tube. Although numerous high-quality studies prove the protective effect against caries, some suppliers – especially natural cosmetics manufacturers – do not add fluoride. Instead, they often rely on herbal substances, such as coconut oil, sage or green tea. However, their protective effect against caries has not been sufficiently proven. Good news for natural cosmetics users: There are also very good fluoride-containing pastes with a natural cosmetics seal of approval.
The abrasion of the toothpaste is also decisive
An important point when choosing the right toothpaste is also the so-called abrasion. While plaque can be removed with a toothbrush and water if necessary, toothpaste should also remove unattractive discoloration caused by coffee, black tea or cigarettes. For this are surfactants. Cleaning particles contain. Depending on the amount, size, shape and type of the added cleaning agents, toothpastes have a different abrasion. Even high abrasion cannot harm healthy teeth. There is usually no information about abrasion on the packaging – so we check it in the laboratory using scientific methods.
Tip: Stiftung Warentest has determined the abrasion of all products. You can filter the toothpastes in the test specifically for abrasion.
