Painful disease of the teeth in cats

veterinary practice in brandenburg dr. schwarz nbsp nbspsingleview trivia

Nearly one in five cats is plagued by feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL). This painful disease of the teeth is widespread among domestic cats, but its exact cause has not yet been determined. If a cat is affected by FORL, its tooth substance is randomly degraded from the root by the body's own degradation cells (odontoclasts). This is an autoimmune disease that can be accompanied by severe inflammation in the mouth area. However, not only these inflammations are painful, but also the fact that the tooth root remains vital and thus very sensitive during the decay process. The pain causes the cats to be reluctant to eat. They are very hungry, but drop the food and even run away from it. Some cats become aggressive due to the pain, smacking more, developing an enormous desire to clean, which leads to licking away the hair (lick alopecia). In addition, there is a bad breath and increased salivation, head tilting and atypical tongue movements. A clear sign of pain in the mouth area is also the typical jaw chattering (so-called chattering), which most cat owners, however, unfortunately do not recognize as an expression of pain. Since the disease begins in the root area, which is not visible, X-rays of the teeth must be taken if FORL is suspected. This allows one to assess the full extent or. recognize how advanced the disease is. A note is also often received after a typical tartar removal of the older cat. Holes are often found in the teeth under the tartar indicating FORL. During the annual check-up, the vet can see if any teeth have already broken off due to a decayed tooth root. So far, no cure has been found, but extraction, i.e. removal of all teeth, is the most useful treatment method so far. Caring for a toothless cat is certainly a strange idea, but cats can continue to live normally without teeth. The cat will thank you for taking away the constant toothache and continuous dental treatments are no longer necessary.
