WHO: More vaccine-preventable diseases in AfricaBRAZZAVILLE (dpa-AFX) – Since the start of the Corona pandemic, Africa has seen a sharp increase in outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Between January and March, nearly 17,500 cases of measles were recorded in the region, a 400 percent increase over the same period last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa said Thursday. According to the report, a total of 20 African countries would have reported measles outbreaks in the first quarter of the year – eight more than in the first three months of 2021.
Outbreaks of other vaccine-preventable diseases have also become more frequent, according to WHO. Polio had broken out in 24 African countries by 2021. This is four more countries than the previous year, he said. To that end, 13 countries reported new yellow fever outbreaks in 2021, compared with nine outbreaks in 2020 and three in 2019.
The main factor responsible for the increases was the disruption of vaccination campaigns since the start of the Corona pandemic, it said. WHO regional director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti called the trend a "warning sign". "While Africa works hard to defeat Covid-19, we must not forget other health threats", said Moeti./kpa/DP/jha
